Repairing a Salvage Car from Auction — What to Expect
7 min read
Most cars from Copart and IAAI are salvage vehicles. We explain how the repair process works, from scoping the damage to the test drive.
Cars from US auctions are most often vehicles that have been in an accident. Repair is the stage that decides the profitability of the whole import — so it’s worth knowing what it involves.
What the repair involves
| Stage | What it covers | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Scoping the damage | Teardown, structural check | Hidden damage |
| Parts | Ordering originals / aftermarket | Delivery time |
| Bodywork and paint | Straightening, panel replacement | Body geometry |
| Mechanicals | Suspension, safety systems | Airbags, belts |
| Inspection and test drive | Final tests | Low |
Assessing damage in the workshop

The key rule: an honest repair estimate before bidding. A car with light body damage can be a great deal; structural damage or a compromised battery pack in an EV can exceed the value of the vehicle.
